Hidcote Garden

Hidcote Garden is one of the most acclaimed gardens in the Cotswolds.  It is situated just minutes away from Chipping Campden and is owned and operated by The National Trust.  Hidcote is a quintessential Cotswold attraction, visited by locals and visitors from near and far.

Begun in 1907, the garden was the brainchild of American horticulturist, Major Lawrence Johnston and is a classic example of an early Arts and Crafts creation.  Major Johnston transformed the existing North Cotswold farmland into a 10½ acre masterpiece of colourful borders and intricately designed outdoor ‘rooms’ that continue to delight visitors, throughout the year.

Hidcote Garden has a maze of narrow paved pathways, from which you will discover secret gardens, sweeping lawns, magnificent views, and countless flowers and plants, many of which were collected from Johnston’s early plant expeditions to far-away places. It’s the perfect place if you’re in need of gardening inspiration.

Find a quiet spot and sit on one of the ornate benches and watch green woodpeckers search for their lunch or listen to the calls from the buzzards circling overhead.  Time it right and you might catch a glimpse of the elusive hummingbird moth, or even spot a great crested newt basking in the lily pool.  Meander through the intricate garden spaces and into the Wilderness. This secluded stretch of tall trees is just right for a picnic. Take a glimpse beyond the boundary and see the garden blend effortlessly into the countryside beyond.
